Tom and Freddie barely had a moment to take the situation in when a shot rang out. Freddie grabbed the knife laying on the ground. The two of them dove for cover as another shot ricocheted off a nearby piece of equipment with a loud twang.

“Damn you mammals! We will be rid of your kind on this world. And once you are gone it will return to its formal natural beauty and balance.”

Two more shots slammed into the service box Tom and Freddie were hidden behind. Tom called to Agent Mabon from behind the cover. “There is no need for violence. Things can be worked out between us and all your concerns will be addressed.”

Another shot rang out. “There will be no talks. Your kind is going to destroy this world. You are incapable of making good decisions. You kill any of your own kind that even suggest alternatives to your barbarous ways. You do not want change and will not do so.”

“Not everyone is like that. There are many good people in our society. People who care and are working for social change. You are making a sweeping generalization when you say we are all bad. So far none of your people have been hurt. Well, maybe a little bruised and stunned but they will all recover. If we are as bad as you say we are, they’d be dead now.”

“And they would have died for a glorious cause.”

Freddie was next to Tom holding the knife he took from the reptiloid. He gauged the balance and weight. “It is not well balanced for throwing but I think I can make it work.”

“We don’t want to kill her. That would only be proving her point.”

“I can wound her. At least enough to keep her from firing the gun at us.”

“It isn’t my preferred action but we do need to be safe.”

Somewhere in the distance a lone police siren wailed.

“Maybe the cavalry is arriving.”

Tom nodded. “I’ll see if I can draw her fire and you make the throw.”

Tom raised his hands and stepped from behind the box. “Do you hear that? That is the emergency services arriving. Soon this place will be surrounded by police. Your plan is at an end. If you surrender to us I’ll do everything I can to help you.”

“All you will do is betray me.” Agent Mabon raised the pistol to fire.

Freddie sprang up from the other side of the container and hurled the knife at her. It rolled end over end through the air until it finally embedded itself in Mabon’s side. She let out a scream as she dropped the gun.

“You say you want peace and yet you attack. You haven’t seen the last of us, mammal.” Sliding back her coat sleeve, she pushed several buttons on a bracer on her forearm. Slowly she started to rise off the ground, as did the rest of the reptiloids. They quickly gained speed until they were high in the sky and nearly out of sight.
