Meanwhile, in a nearby alternate dimension to our own….
Thara blocked the violent swing of the staff coming at here just in time. Excitement coursed through her veins. Her senses were heightened and adrenaline kept her on her toes.
“Pay attention” she thought. “Seeko nearly took your head off with that blow.”
The two women circled each other in the arena, each looking for an opening, something that might give them an advantage. Thara had her two ironwood sticks, while Seeko had her ironwood staff.
Seeko made another swing at Thara, which Thara caught on her stick. Thara launched several counter strikes but Seeko had already moved out of striking distance.
“You move like an old woman,” Seeko taunted. “I’m surprised you haven’t died of old age yet.”
“I’m only a year older than you, you young whelp. I have more experience than you, which gives me the tactical advantage.”
Seeko made a sweeping attack trying to knock Thara’s legs from under her, but Thara easily jumped over the attack. She took advantage of Seeko’s over extending and slammed into her, knocking her to the ground. Quickly she pinned her opponent and immobilized her.
“Do you yield?” Thara asked.
Seeko struggled for a bit, trying to get out from under Thara, but said nothing.
Thara shifted her weight for a better pin and asked again “Do you yield?”
Finally Seeko accepted that she was defeated. In a loud voice she called “I yield.”
The crowd attending the fight cheered, as Thara got up and then reached down to help Seeko up. Together they turned toward the pavillion where the Queen sat. They knelt on the ground and prostrated themselves before her.
“Rise, my daughters. You have fought well today.”
Thara and Seeko stood. They both felt a sense of elation at the praise they had been given.
“Thara, you have won the battle and earned the honor of leading the hunt for the Trantor beast. I am very proud of you this day.”
“Thank you, Most Beloved Mother. I will do my best to bring honor to the hunt.”
“I’m sure you will, child. Now, go prepare. Tomorrow you hunt a dangerous and savage beast. You will need to be sharp and alert.”
Thara and Seeko bowed their heads and left the battle field.
