I love movies. I love a good story, well told, with great visuals and funny bits. I also love trashy ‘so terrible they’re good’ movies, which walk a fine line between being awesomely bad and just awfully awful.
There are several movies I want to make. Or remake, as the case may be.
One of the ones I want to do is Something Wicked This Way Comes. The 1983 Disney version was a decent adaption of the book by the same name, by my favorite author Ray Bradbury. There are parts they left out and put their own segments in, because Disney.
I’d like to go back to the original source material and bring in the elements of Bradbury’s original story, focusing on the coming of age and growing up parts of the story.
One of the key parts of doing this right is getting the actor to play Mr. Dark. In the Disney version, the part was played amazingly well by Johnathan Pryce. He captured the essence of Dark and portrayed him at his sinister best.
In my version I think I’ve picked the right modern actor for the role – James MacAvoy. He’s been able to handle every role I’ve seen him in, from Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The With and The Wardrobe to playing Charles Xavier in the various X-Men movies, he has always brought a subtle quiet intensity to the characters, which is what you need to play Mr. Dark.
There is plenty of creepy material in the original story that Disney should have kept instead of putting in the sequence with the spiders, which felt kinda heavy-handed to me. I’d do the killing of the dust witch properly this time. And so many other changes.
Are there any movies you think should be redone? Things that weren’t done as well as the book? Leave a comment and let me know.
