So, my day job is working as a virtual assistant for authors. One of the services I offer is formatting books for ebook and print distribution.
Recently I started using a new program called Atticus to format the books. The learning curve has been a little steep and a challenge, but it is also a lot of fun.
I enjoy learning new things. And there’s a lot that goes into formatting a book. Kerning, spacing between paragraphs, font sizes and styles, scene breaks, first line drop caps … let’s face it. There are lots of moving parts that have to all work together when formatting the book.
I love it, though. Yeah, it can be annoying when you want to do something simple and have to spend an hour and a half to finally find the way to do it. But once I’ve found it, I know how to correct the problem going forward. Any book that I format from now on will be that much easier, because now I know what I’m doing.
I have by no means mastered the whole program at this point. I still have much to learn. At least I’m having a ball while I’m doing my ‘on-thejob training.’
Have you had to learn something new for your job, or just for fun? Leave a comment below and let me know what it is and how it went.
