National Science Fiction Day 2024

  • by

Here in the States, January 2 is celebrated as National Science Fiction Day. It’s an unofficial holiday, in that the Federal Government doesn’t recognize it as such, but hey, we sci-fi fans have never worried about conventions like that.We have more important conventions, like WorldCon.

The reason for January 2 is that it coincides with Isaac Asimov’s birthday. He’s the guy that brought us the Foundation series, as well as the Three Laws Of Robotics, plus a whole lot more. Of course, Asimov was prolific, and put out over 400 books in his lifetime, including a lot of non-fiction. He was once quoted as saying whenever he wanted to learn something he’d write a book about it.

I’m generally a fan of most things sci-fi. I love Star Trek and Star Wars. There are many that fall into only one of those camps and the arguments over which is better tend from the truly epic to the utterly ridiculous.

I’m also a fan of other franchises like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (except the last season of the reboot – we don’t talk about it), Babylon 5, even some more obscure ones like Misfits of Science or The Phoenix. There are far too many to list here.

If you’re a fellow sci-fi affianado, leave a comment and tell me some of your favorites – books, movies, TV shows. I’m always looking for new things to read or watch.

If you’d like to support my efforts, why not buy me a chocolate chip cookie through my Ko-Fi page? https://ko-fi.com/jhusum
