Random reboots – WTF?

Back in January I noted that my computer was randomly rebooting itself that evening and consequently I had a very short post.

Since then, my computer has been randomly rebooting itself with no rhyme or reason to it. At first it was maybe once a week. More recently it might be several times in one day. A few days ago it was three times in one hour.

I’m not sure what is causing this. I’ve only started doing some research on the problem but I’m not finding anything to inspire a lot of hope that it will be resolved.

It is of course one of the two things – either the hardware is failing, or the software, probably something in the operating system, has gotten corrupted.

I’m hoping that I won’t need a new computer in the near future. I could probably swing the expense but I’d rather not have to do so.

In the meantime I’m trying to make sure I’ve got backups of anything important.

If you have any suggestions on how to solve the problem, dear reader, hit reply and let me know.

If you’d like to support my efforts, why not buy me a chocolate chip cookie through my Ko-Fi page? https://ko-fi.com/jhusum

  1. If it’s a Windows box, and it’s not infected with something that’s banging on the network, it’s the hardware. Absent hardware fails and malware, any Windows since 2000 should run stable indefinitely, even using ill-mannered programs. Shorter and shorter intervals between can be dusty-and-overheating, or can be a capacitor approaching EOL, tho we don’t see that so much anymore.

If it’s a linux box, it’s probably the sound driver.

  2. It’s a Windows box and getting up there in years. I could see dirt and overheating being the culprits. I’ll just have to work more on cleaning up my desk and getting adequate ventilation on the machine.
    Thanks!
