Yet more on Magdalena

  • by

At the risk of having you unsubscribe from my list, my Hordeling, here is yet another post about our recent member of our dog pack, Magdalena. To be fair, I did say when I started up this blog that I’d probably talk a lot about my dogs.

We were up early and out the door to take her and Major Tom to the vet. Magdalena because she had to get her next round of vaccinations, and Major Tom because Magdalena bit him in the face the other day when she attacked Houdini and Major Tom jumped to his defense.

They both did well in the car but that was because we had Major Tom crated so they couldn’t get at each other.

The Animal Clinic we took them to is not accepting new patients but they took Magdalena because they have an agreement with the animal shelter we adopted her from. If you adopt a dog (or cat) from the animal shelter, they give you a list of vets that will do the exam, vaccinations and spay / neuter for free. They get the adoption fees paid to the animal shelter when an adopted animal comes to their clinic.

We had to wait in the car until they were ready for us, but fortunately it was cloudy and (relatively) cool so it wan’t too bad. I got them both out for short walks and potty breaks as we waited.

When we finally got in for the exam, both dogs behaved themselves. Major even went over to sniff Magdalena and she didn’t react. A hopeful sign that we may be able to integrate her into the pack.

The vet saw Magdalena first. She got her vaccinations without so much as a yelp. We scheduled the spaying surgery for later in August. The vet couldn’t detect any signs that she has been spayed yet so they’ll have to do the surgery.

The vet looked at Major Tom. His eye is a little swollen and there is some redness in the eye itself. We got an ointment we have to put in his eye twice a day for 10 days. The first application went fine. The second one, not as well, but I did get the ointment in his eye. I suspect future applications are not going to go well.

The dogs were well behaved on the trip home and even after we got home. Sirocco was hysterical when we left and very relieved when we returned. Magdalena did the ‘I want to play’ pounce but Sirocco is still having none of that.

Both Major and Sirocco went up behind her at different points to sniff her butt and walked away without incident. Baby steps toward getting her integrated. The wife is growing more attached to her every day so we are hoping things work out.
