Another flash fiction down, The Crow, and more dog shtuff

  • by

And another flash fiction tale is in the bag. I finished off the tale for Cat Gerlach’s Indie Author Advent calendar. I’m going to let it sit over night ad see how I like it i the morning and if it needs revising. Probably does. I rather like the way this one turned out.

I started over on the second zombie story. The previous story wasn’t working so I ditched it. Not sure about the new story but we’ll see how it looks tomorrow when I sit down to work on it again. If I still like it, I’ll finish it and if not it too will go into File 13.

Moving on to dog news – we got up and about early. I got all the dogs walked and we loaded Magdalena in the car. We drove her to the Animal Hospital and dropped her off to get spayed. I always feel kinda bad about doing that but it is necessary to keep unwanted litters of puppies coming into the world.

Spent the day running errands and doing some shopping. Had lunch out. We were going to try several new places but we were too early for them. None of them opened before noon. We didn’t want to wait for any of them to open and ended up at one of our old standbys.

Went to watch the new version of The Crow. I saw the original when it was released in theatres and I thought it was good and complete all by itself. Much like Highlander, there should have been only one.

This one had the essential elements correct. Bill Skarsgård plays Eric, and does a decent job as a down and out loser who encounters the love of his life, Shelly (FKA Twigs) in a rehab center. They have a new villain, Vincent Roeg (Dany Huston) who has his own dark secret. The tale takes a bit to set up and get going, but of course, Eric ad Shelly die, Eric comes back, and hunts down the guys who killed them.

The story is different than the original, which is good, because a straight reboot would not be worthwhile. Taken on its own merits, it is decent, well acted but has a few problems with pacing and believability. And the end isn’t what you would expect. It is better than the other Crow movies released after the original, but still not as good as the original. If you’re a fan of the original, you may not like the new one.

After the movie, it was time to pick up Magdalena. It took them about twenty minutes to get her for us. She was still a bit groggy from the anesthetic. They said she had a uterus infection that complicated things but she came trough it. We brought her home and she has been near me or the wife all evening. We got a cone to put on her so she doesn’t lick the incision. Magdalena’s a licker so it is a necessary precaution. She’s also going to be on pain meds for a few days.

In all, a busy day. I’m happy to be one flash fiction story closer to reaching the goal and happy Magdalena came through her surgery all right.
