Happy Labor Day!

  • by

Here in the United States, the first Monday in September is Labor Day. It’s a Federal holiday, meaning that most businesses, schools, and government offices (like the Post Office) are closed so all the employees can go out and celebrate instead.

Americans are big on being industrious and in the late 1800s Unions started forming as the Industrial Revolution took off. Progress was rapidly made as the telegraph sped up communications, the railroads opened up new territories and manufacturing produced goods so more people could buy things. All of this relied on laborers to get everything done. Corporations pushed for greater profits, usually at the expense of the workers. Long hours, low pay, and dangerous tasks were common, and the workers didn’t see any of the financial benefits their labor helped produce. The Unions developed so the workers could maintain or improve the conditions they were working under.

Eventually the unions got together and moved to have a day set aside to recognize the laborers, and celebrate their contributions to society, thus ‘Labor Day.’

I spent the day laboring, however, trying to get caught up on some client work and some other tasks. I did get more writing in, so that part of laboring I don’t mind.

If you’re in the States, my Hordeling, I hope you had a good day off and time to relax. If not, well, I hope you had a good day anyway.
