Hurricane aftermath

  • by

As I type this, Florida is being slammed by Hurricane Milton, a week and a half after Hurricane Helene. Both are Category 5 strength. When they are that strong you run like Hell. I can’t imagine having to go through that.

In the Appalachian area, there was much devastation when Helene rolled through. It didn’t even get the full brunt of the storm. The area had major damage to highways, closing down large sections. Local roads took a lot of damage. Entire streets, and the buildings lining them, were washed away. People, and animals, were washed away. Trees are down.

Many people are getting power back finally, two weeks after the storm rolled by, but there are still areas where the infrastructure needs to be rebuilt before power can be restored. Those areas aren’t likely to get power again before next year.

Many areas have had a ‘boil water’ notice in effect, where it wasn’t safe to drink the tap water. Most of those have been lifted now.

Everywhere there are people in need of supplies and goods. We’ve been helping out at our church. They’ve had trucks coming in from all over, even out of state, dropping off food, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, clothes, toiletries, you name it. It’s quite an effort to unload them all, and get things sorted.

There have been many people coming to get the supplies who lost everything. I’m always a little surprised when they pick up something and say “Can I take this?” They seem afraid that we’re going to tell them “No!” and drive them away with pitchforks. My answer is always “Certainly. Take what you need. Do you need help getting it to your car?”

I get a lot of hugs, and I get to pet a lot of dogs, while handing out supplies. Bonus!

If you’re in Florida I hope you were able to evacuate to someplace else. If not, I hope you are in a safe shelter. This is far more than anyone should have to go through.

If you’re not in Florida or other area affected by the storms please consider donating to relief efforts. May people are counting on it for their very survival.

Be well, my Hordeling.
