So, I had another doctor appointment this morning. I was expecting them to do a full blood draw. So I skipped breakfast, and took an Ativan about half a hour before my appointment.
I got to the appointment on time and had a conversation with the doctor. He said they were doing a simple finger stick so they could check my A1C levels and I didn’t have to do a full blood draw. Load off my mind but that means I didn’t really need to take the Ativan. Oh well, at least I was pretty content for most of the day.
The nurse let me do the actual sticking of my finger to get the blood. It was cold this morning so my hands were cold. I spent a few minutes before the stick rubbing them together trying to get some blood flow and heat into them. Fortunately that worked well enough that I got a decent sized drop of blood for them to get their reading.
A week or so ago my docotor put me back on the Rosuvastatin. Then a few days ago we started the metformin again. I’m going back to starting with the lowest dose of metformin and ramping it up over the next few weeks. He wants me on the metformin not only to help with the blood sugar levels but also to help keep my kidneys from shutting down. The Rosuvastatin is to help keep me from having a stroke or heart attack.
The A1C test showed that my levels dropped from 11 down to 8.3. The doctor was pleased with this result. He said it was most likely that large a change from changing the way I eat, and only partially from being on the handful of drugs he put me on. I’ve been eating much better since we started this whole round of medical checkups. I had been eating badly over the last few months (I know it) so I went back to being more disciplined about what I eat. I discovered that I needed to stop eating the cereal I normally eat because it was spiking my blood sugar. I’ve changed cereals but might have to switch again or go to eating something altogether different. The new cereal is raising my blood sugars but only by about half of the previous cereal. I’ll see if the metformin brings things under control before switching my breakfast foods.
I gave up my weekly Dr. Pepper (booo!) because I thought it might be screwing up my blood sugar so badly that I was heaving my guts out. I did have a Dr. Pepper with dinner this evening (it’s Friday, the day I usually have one.) My blood sugars did go up (170), but nowhere near as high as I thought they would. Again, I’ll have to see how things go now that I’m back on metformin. I should probably cut Dr. Pepper out completely but I’m hoping I get to have one every now and again.
I have to remain disciplined and keep checking my blood sugar levels. I have to adult. Adulting sucks. But being put in a hospital due to complications from not taking care of my diabetes sucks too. It is the latter that motivates me to adult in this situation. I’ll just have to find other situations to kid.
On the whole, though, I remain fairly indestructible.
