We went to visit my step-granddaughter this afternoon to drop off a Christmas gift that had been left behind during the day of gift exchange.
We arrived a few minutes before she got home. We had a nice chat with her Mom and soon we heard the bus pulling up outside. Mom went out to meet the bus and we could hear fussing right away. Soon, Mom and granddaughter came back in the house. It seems something happened in gym class today at school and the granddaughter was not pleased about it. We didn’t find out what the problem was.
The granddaughter was in a foul mood when she came through the door. She barely said hello to us.
Then she saw the gift sitting on the table. She made a beeline to it.
Soon she had it opened and saw what we brought her. It was a backpack that looked like a fluffy cat.
She loved it. She had a complete 180 turnaround in her mood. Whatever the problem with gym class had been was completely forgotten. We got a ‘thank you’ before she disappeared into her room with her new prize.
You never know what other people are going through. It could be something as simple as a stubbed toe, or a bad day at gym class, or something as significant as a cancer diagnosis or a death in the family.
If other people are mean to you, or just plain nasty in general, you just don’t know what they may be going through. Try to be kind.
You don’t have to have a surprise gift waiting for them when they get home. It could be as simple as just letting whatever they throw at you roll off your back and forget it. Maybe you just need to lend an ear while they vent. Maybe they could just use a smile or a kind word. Maybe a hug, if you know them well enough to know it will be welcomed. You never know what your act of kindness might mean to that person. It could potentially change the direction of their life.
As I always strive to do, just one small act each day to make someone else’s life go a little smoother.
Who’s day can you brighten up, my Hordeling?
