We’ve slacked off over the last week and haven’t done much work on getting the house cleaned out. With that in mind, the wife declared that we were going to Get. Something. Done. today!
She decided to work on cleaning up some of the stuff in the upstairs rooms. Last looks at the Christmas Room, some things in the main room, and starting on the closets. She valiantly made her way up the stairs and we got to work.
There were various pictures and frames that needed to be boxed up so I got to work on those. The wife finished with some of the ornaments and other things from the last Christmas tree being undecorated. Then we converged on one of the bedrooms to start clearing out the closet. It takes a while to go through all the clothes hanging in a closet but we got through them all. They have been sorted into the usual keep / sell / donate piles.
The wife directed me to get the last remaining items out of the closet (two pictures, a suitcase ad some backpacks) as she headed out of the room. I was getting the pictures out when I heard the wife yelp and a crash. I ran out of the room and started calling for her. She finally answered and I found her in the bathroom. She’d fallen and was lying on the floor. After ascertaining she wasn’t injured we started trying to figure out how to get her up.
I looked for a volunteer fire department in our area but due to where we reside if we call 9-1-1 they send out an ambulance and EMTs or the Fire Department. Each time that happens, we get a bill for five hundred ad eighty-one dollars ($581). That isn’t in our budget so we need a different way to handle things.
I couldn’t call our son-in-law since he was at work. I went to several of our neighbor’s houses but no one was home.
Coming back to the house the best plan we could come up with was to have the wife get down the hallway to the stairs. Once there we could get her feet under her and get some leverage to pick her up. She had to crawl down the hallway and I couldn’t do anything to help her, but she did manage to do it.
Once she was at the top of the stairs, she turned around so we could get her feet on one of the lower steps. Then, with her holding on to the railing and me pulling we got her standing, down the stairs and to a chair.
We started looking at lift chairs – portable chairs that can get someone off the floor when they fall. They can be moved around easily so you can get it to the location where the person has fallen. Then you get them on the seat and it slowly lifts the person off the ground to a position where they can stand on their feet. They are expensive but cheaper than having the local EMTS or firefighters come to help. And since my Green Lantern power ring doesn’t work we’re going to need some alternative to get the wife all the floor.
Wish us luck in finding a suitable lift chair, my Hordeling.
