Laser tech, wind gusts, restless nap, computer issues

  • by

Bit of a crazy day today.

The wife had an appointment with a pain specialist this morning. This doctor uses lasers to help get rid of the inflammation in an area of the body and claims an eighty-six to ninety-two percent (86 – 92 %) success rate. The doctor also said they have just released a new, improved laser which has three times the power than the previously used industry standard laser. All of which sounds good, but I don’t have the medical background or knowledge to know if it is worth doing or not. And the cost of the procedures, in both money and time, ain’t cheap.

The wife has had some experience with laser pain treatments before, but it was on her dog, Max. Max was a throwback Pomeranian, who was thrown over the fence at the local animal pound and landed on his head. Then the wife came along and adopted him. He always lived in his own little world but he was a sweet dog. In his later years he had arthritis, making it difficult for him to get around. She took him to a vet that used lasers for pain treatment and after one or two sessions the wife said Max was a changed dog, running and jumping like he hadn’t done in years. If it works that well on humans, and the tech has improved since Max had his done, maybe it is worth a shot?

It was raining this morning, with a thunderstorm rolling through the area. Getting the wife to her appointment became a exercise in agility and careful foot placement. Fortunately by the time we got out a little after noon the rain had gone and the sun was out. The reason the rain had gone though was wind. We had a lot of wind going through the area.

After lunch, I fired up my computer which I had kept off due to the thunderstorm rolling through earlier in the day. I had a just gotten things booted up, and was launching MySQL to do a little database work when the power blinked out for a few seconds. Just like happened the other day. Fuggle me blue. < heavy sigh >

I managed to get the computer rebooted. I checked MySQL and it was corrupted. Again. The XAMPP control panel was also pooched. I was preparing to uninstall the whole thing to start over when the power went out. Again. And it stayed off.

Not much else to do at that point, so I went to take a nap. I got about fifteen minutes of sleep when the small furball who shall remain Sirocco-less started whining at the bedroom door. The power came back on, but went off again a few minutes later. I spent about an hour and a half trying to get some decent sleep but between the whiny furball and the power going on and off there wasn’t much success.

Got some more work done on the house and we now have one room that is totally cleaned out! Yay us!

This evening I managed to get XAMPP reinstalled plus my dev environment set up again.

I really need to set up an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) so this doesn’t keep happening. I have one somewhere but with all the chaos of getting the house cleaned out I don’t know where it is. I’ll just have to be more careful and make more backups between in the meantime.
