The Quest for Ice

  • by

The wife likes to chew on ice. Like, non-stop. Her favorite ice delivery system is a large cup of ice tea. Once she’s done drinking the tea, she has a whole cup of ice to chew upon.

Last night we ran out of ice. Now, our refrigerator has an ice maker, but that’s not good enough for the wife. She likes the ice from Sonic (https://www.sonicdrivein.com/), a local drive-in eatery. They sell bags of ice so that’s where I get her supply.

This morning we had house shtuff to do, and then I had to run to the grocery store. The skies were thick with heavy, dark rain clouds so I was hoping I could get to the store before a torrential downpour fell upon me. I managed to do that, and gathered groceries under the same apprehension. I carried the groceries to the car and loaded it up, all the while keeping an eye on the skies.

There is a Sonic on the way home from the grocery store (well, mostly on the way, only a little out of the way) so I figured it would be best to grab a bag of ice to keep the wife happy. It’s a left hand turn into the Sonic and traffic was fairly heavy. The clouds still hung menacingly overhead. I finally got a break in the traffic and turned in. Fortunately this Sonic has a drive thru window so I pulled up.

“Welcome to Sonic, can I take your order?”

“I’d like a bag of ice, please.”

“I’m sorry, we just overhauled our ice machine. We won’t have ice util tomorrow. Sorry.”

“Oh, well, thanks.”

Grrrr.

I rushed home and got the groceries unloaded just a few minutes before the heavens opened up and unleashed the dreaded torrential downpour.

Later in the day, just as I’m getting dinner ready, the wife asks “Can you get me a glass of tea?”

“Sorry, Sonic didn’t have any ice today. Their ice machine was overhauled but they should have some tomorrow.”

“Which one did you go to?”

“The one I usually go to.”

“Did you go to the other one near the church?”

“Ah, the one where we got the dreaded Slushie of Doom. No, I didn’t try that one.”

“I can understand why. Could you get some ice for me from there?”

“I can after dinner.”

So, after dinner I’m back out on the road to the alternate Sonic location. Traffic was insane. The road I had to take was backed up for about half a mile. I eventually got through that and arried at the Sonic. This one doesn’t have a convenient drive thru window so I had to park in one of the stalls to place my order. I pressed the button to place the order, and asked for a bag of ice.

“Coming right up!”

As I was waiting, the heavens once again opened up with a torrential downpour. My ice came out and I paid for it, then headed home, windshield wipers flapping furiously, trying to swat away the sheets of rain. I was fortunate that the rain stopped just as I pulled into the driveway. The wife had ice again, and all was right with the world.

“Honey, could you get me a glass of tea?”

Gotta go.
