Five pounds of burgers in one sitting – a challenge

We went out to eat at a restaurant in town this afternoon. It’s a nice place, the service was decent, and the overall the food was good.

They had one item on their menu that intrigued me. The 5 Lb. Burger Challenge.

The description was a little vague. You get five one pound burgers to eat. The menu lists about five different types of cheese, but it doesn’t specify if each burger gets all five types of cheese (that’d be a lot of cheese), or if each of the five burgers gets one type of cheese. You also get chips with it so I’m guessing they expect you to eat those too. The whole thing is listed at $69.95 and states that you must call ahead before ordering it.

Considering that ever since my doctor put me back on Metformin, I’m hungry all the time. I have it in my mind that I could take that challenge. I feel like I’ve become your average teen-age male ‘bottomless pit’ when it comes to eating. Very rarely does a meal make me feel full.

As our waitress floated past our table, refilling drinks and checking to make sure everything was alright, I asked her questions about the challenge.

“So, what do you get if you win the challenge?”

“You get the meal for free.”

“Has anyone ever won?”

“No one has even come close.”

“Is there a time limit?”

“I think half an hour. They’ve got it set up so the odds are stacked against you.”

“That’s what makes it a challenge!”

She walked away. I should have asked if you got bathroom breaks. Probably not. They’d want to make sue you ate it all without voiding your bowels or stomach.

I finished my meal, a mushroom Swiss burger with a side of mac ‘n cheese. Then I finished off the wife’s mac ‘n cheese. I have to admit it was one of the few times I felt (mostly) full after a meal in the last year. It was enough to make me reconsider the challenge. I’m guessing it was the mac ‘n cheese that made me feel full. Large quantities of pasta make me feel full. Add cheese in there and you’ve got something that is bad for me to eat a lot of but makes me feel full.

I’ll likely not take up the challenge as that much food in one sitting would likely throw my blood sugar off, clog my arteries, give me a heart attack and kill me. But it will likely sit in the back of my brain as a fun possibility. Maybe my Muse will write a story about it instead. Or maybe I’ll do it, my Muse will write the screenplay about the event, and I’ll sell the story to a major studio for big bucks. Time will tell.
