We had to leave the house this afternoon, and I figured we’d be gore a while. Since it was a relatively nice day outside I decided to let the dog’s stay in the backyard. That way they could run and play and use the potty if they needed.
I got their water bowls filled and put on the back porch, then got the wife out to the car. Finally I put the dogs outside. This way they couldn’t get out the gate and run off while getting the wife outside.
When we left all three dogs were sitting at the back gate, staring at us. Well, not just staring. Howling up a storm would be more accurate. You’d think we were abandoning them, never to return. Sirocco is probably the most vocal of the three, followed closely by Magdalena. Major Tom really only barks when he perceives a threat.
Magdalena stood with her paws on top of the gate, giving off that weak sort of howl of hers. Sirocco, who is only part Husky, inherited the full Husky vocalization ability. He’s teaching Magdalena and she learns quickly. Now she howls at the backdoor as I’m walking Sirocco. Any day now I suspect she’ll be howling when we leave the house, even if it is just a few minutes.
She could jump the gate if she wanted, but it seems she hasn’t thought of that yet. It must be a dog thing. I remember a number of years ago I was visiting my sister. She was having a social gathering, so she had her dogs blocked off in the kitchen by a little folding gate. They were sizable dogs (black labs) and could stand by the folding gate and look over it. They could easily jump over but never got the idea. My sister also had a cat. The cat was at the back of the house and decided she wanted to be Somewhere Else (as cats do.) She strolled through the kitchen, walked to the gate, paused a moment, then leapt over the gate and strolled off. The dogs watched this whole process. They could nearly step over the folding gate. And yet, they never got past the barrier. (Sweet, lovable dogs but soooo dumb.)
When we came back a few hours later, all three dogs were sitting at the backyard gate, just like we left them. I wonder if they moved at all. I’m sure they did, but they were more than eager to resume their positions. If they didn’t moved that whole time, I nominate them for membership to the Royal Guard at Buckingham Palace. They could stand at attention all day and bite the obnoxious tourist that tease the guards.
What do you think, my Hordeling? Could our canine trio be Royal Guards at Buckingham Palace? Leave a comment and let me know.
