Hanging pictures

  • by

We’ve cleaned up most of the living space in the house now. We can actually walk around without tripping over boxes and other items all over the floor.

I got to the last bookcase today. It turns out that the brackets that hold up several of the shelves got lost in transit but I did get four shelves up, then started packing them with books. I’ll have to see if I can find similar brackets in the local area. If all else fails, I’ll have to see if any makers in the area have a 3D scanner. That would let me get a file to print new brackets. I can send it off to a company to have them printed in metal to make sure they will hold the shelves and books. The wonders of modern technology.

Now that most of the items are unboxed and put away, the wife is domesticating the house. Yes, we’ve moved into the picture hanging phase of moving in. The wife used to be a professional photographer so she loves pictures. She has a fair number of framed photos, and thousands of photos in photo albums. They’ve filled two of the built-in bookcases and we still have more leftover.

We have one picture (not one of the wife’s) that is a winter scene of trees in the forest, covered in snow. It has a button you can press so LED lights throughout the painting blink on and off. We always had it in the Christmas area of the Texas house, but this time we put it in the bedroom. I think it will be nice to look at as I’m falling asleep with the lights blinking like fireflies.

We did manage to find the one painting that her friend painted that we’ve been looking for. The wife is very happy about that. It was one of the first paintings we hung. We’ve also hung lots of family portraits. We have maybe another ten (10) or so to hang but I have no idea where they are going to go. I have a few pieces of art of my own that will go in my office area, although I haven’t figured out exact placement yet.

I’m trying to be careful with all her pictures and get the placement right when hanging them. I measure carefully and do my best to get the precise placement on the wall that the wife wants. No matter how hard I try, though, I always get the same comment:

“It’s crooked.”

That, my Hordeling, is the reason why I have a level with me. I use it to make the pictures as level as I can. There have been a few times when the wife is right and whatever I’m hanging might be slightly off. The level helps me correct those. It’s an old house though. I figure the house is crooked and the pictures are perfectly level.

I hope your world is nice and orderly, my Hordeling. See you tomorrow.
