KPop Demon Hunters – a fun little movie

So, I sat down to watch KPop Demon Hunters this evening. The wife started it with me but bailed soon after it started. She listened to it in the background as she was working on the computer.

It came to the forefront of our attention because our granddaughter likes it and we figured we would have something to talk to her about. Its important to meet kids where they’re at with their interests.

If you’re not familiar with this movie, here it is in a nutshell:

You’ve got your basic good vs. evil story. The heroes are a trio of pop stars, who make the world better through their songs and kick-ass martial arts skills. They get power from their adoring throng of fans. Their songs form a protective barrier that helps keep the demons from entering our world. They are ultimately working toward making the barrier permanent. When the pesky demons do manage to cross the barrier, our heroes kick butt and send them packing.

The demons decide they are tired of losing and it is time to fight fire with fire. They put together their own demonic boy band to go against our heroes. But really – aren’t all boy bands demonic anyway?

The boy band arrives, starts singing and getting the attention of the legion of fans. This leads to conflicts with our girl band until we get to the ultimate showdown. Spoiler alert – the good girls win.

There’s a bit more to it but I don’t want to spoil the whole thing.

It’s a fun little movie, with some catchy tunes. The animation is pretty good, and the story hangs together well enough to keep your attention throughout.

Of course, when I was a kid, Josie and the Pussycats solved cases and saved the world on a weekly basis, but they didn’t have kick-ass martial arts skills. Guess the times have changed and our heroes must change with them.

  1. Technically, the Beatles was a boy band. Of course, the question of whether they were demonic or not is still up for debate in some quarters.
