OK, I have stated it before but I reiterate, I’m a Southern Boy. I grew up in Texas, with a few years spent in New Orleans. One things about The South is that it is HOT! I doubt this is news to anyone.
I’m used to getting up in the mornings in August and the temperatures already being in the 80s deg F (20s deg C). That would be the low of the day. It would get much hotter in the afternoon. Over 100 deg F (37 deg C) is not uncommon.
In the morning you could bake cookies in your car. Seriously. Mix up the batter, put it on a baking sheet, put the sheet in your car (with the windows rolled up) and you would have fresh baked cookies in a little while. You had to keep a eye on them while baking so they came out edible, but you could do it. In the afternoon, those same cookies baked the same amount of time would be scorched cinders.
Where we are now, I get up in the morning to walk the dogs and it is 56 deg F (13 deg C). Sometimes I have to put on a light jacket. In August. My mind screams at me that this is not normal. All I can think of is that soon even this heat will be gone and I will be faced with the Cold Season until next April.
I am grateful for whatever bits of heat I get here. I shouldn’t complain about the temperature. The way the weather is going these days I expect a ecological disaster on the order of Day After Tomorrow. I admit that not being in the oppressive heat has been nice. I’m just not adjusting to this yet, mentally. My sense of what is ‘normal’ is thrown off and I find it a bit disconcerting.
I did manage to adapt to the Winter conditions last year much better than I anticipated. I could have done without having to use a claw hammer to clear ice off the driveway for two days but I have the proper equipment for this year should a similar situation occur. Since I’m going to be here for a number of years to come, I’m going to have to adapt. Maybe by this time next year I’ll have adjusted. We’ll see.
