Making the fans happy

  • by

OK, well, fan, singular. And not one of mine, yet. Let me explain.

Several weeks back I took wife to her dermatology appointment. While we were waiting for the doctor to come in to see her, we were talking with the nurse, We got on the subject of books and how the both of us were writers. She was impressed that the wife writes horror. I told her I write sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery or combinations thereof. We told her about the books we have out, and I pointed her towards our pages on Amazon in case she wanted to pick them up.

We got on to the topic of the writing process and she asked how we came up with characters. She especially wanted to know how the wife does it since she writes horror and does nasty things to her characters in her stories. The wife told her that she takes people from her life and uses them as the basis for characters.

I asked the nurse if we could use her name for a character in our stories. She excitedly said yes. I asked her if she minded if she got killed off. I amended that and explained that it would just be a character with her name and not representative of her in real life. Several writer friends of mine have ‘graveyards’, list of names of fans that they are allowed to use as character names, usually in brief cameo appearances before they get killed off. She said that was fine.

The wife went ahead and wrote a story all around the nurse. I’ve got a idea for one, but it is more in the mystery vein and the Muse has bee on more of a fantasy / supernatural soap opera kick.

Anyway, the wife printed out the story. It’s 32 pages or so. We had to be in the area where her dermatologist’s office is so we stopped by there as we ran errands this afternoon.

I went in and dropped of the story to the nurse. She was all excited about it. She asked if she could keep it and I told her she could. She literally was bouncing with joy. She said she is almost finished with her current book, the library doesn’t have the next book in the series, so she is happy to now have some more reading material. I wonder if she’ll be as happy when I get my story written for her?

Nothing quite as satisfying like making the fans happy. 🙂
