Another ground dweller bites the dust

Magdalena has gotten a little strange over her morning walks recently.

There have been some days where she’ll wait several minutes after I finish walking the other dogs before she’ll get up and go for hers. This morning she wouldn’t even go on a walk.

Several days ago, we got as far as the driveway and she went to the cars. She seems to have thought we were going for a ride. No matter what I did, I couldn’t drag her away from the cars. If she moved, it was to go around the cars. She wouldn’t leave them and go for a walk along our usual route. With great effort I finally dragged her back to the house.

This morning we were out and about. We went past Chunky’s burrow (Chunky is our neighborhood groundhog). She stopped to stick her nose in the hole to see if Chunky was home. One of the rabbits was out and went bounding away when we approached.

It was on the return trip home that Magdalena suddenly stopped. She stuck her nose on the ground and took a big sniff. I couldn’t see anything she might have been after.

She took a few more steps then froze in place. The thing about Siberian Huskies is that if they don’t want to move, they aren’t going to move. I couldn’t cajole, threaten, or drag her away from that spot. She just stood there, staring at the spot on the ground.

Suddenly, she plunged her nose into the dirt. That wasn’t good enough to get her what she wanted so she started digging. It didn’t take long for her to uncover whatever she was after. She plunged her nose into the hole.

She brought her muzzle up and I could see she had something in her mouth but couldn’t quite make out what it was. I pried her jaws open just enough to find out what she had. Turns out it was a mole.

She wouldn’t spit it out and carried it all the way back home. I waited on the back porch until she finally dropped her prize by the back door. I ushered her in, then went back outside to check on the mole.

The poor thing was dead. I took it to the edge of our property and laid it out in the grass. I’m certain something will come along and complete the Circle of Life and eat the carcass.

Some days you win some, some days you get snatched up and crushed in the jaws of a beast much bigger than you.

I hope you’re doing more of the former, and less of the latter, my Hordeling.
