So, the wife and I were out running around and doing errands, and being in Small Town America, we were in the next small town over from where our house is located. It’s a good 40 minute drive between the two.
During our travels my phone rang. CallerID said it was from the Town Clerk. That’s curious because I couldn’t think of any reason for them to call us. I answered.
“Hi, James. This is _ from the Town Clerk’s office. We were looking at a scan of your water usage records and we show that in the last month you’ve used ten thousand (10,000) gallons of water.”
“What!”
“We think there is a leak in your plumbing, or the line hat runs from your meter to your house.”
“Well, I’m fairly certain we don’t have any leaks in the plumbing. I’d think we’d have noticed.”
“It’s probably within the line to your house, then. The report shows a gradual increase during the month, and weird times, like the middle of the night when no one is using water very much.”
“Great. So what do we do? Can you tun ff the water?”
“You’ll have to turn off the water at the main cutoff to your house.”
“We’re not at home and we’re about forty (40) minutes away. And if it is in the line running to the house, how do we get it repaired?”
“You’ll have to call a plumber. Once you get it fixed, bring in the receipt with the cost of repairs and we can adjust your bill.”
“Is there anything the town can do?”
“We’re responsible for anything running to where your line connects to the city water system. Anything running from there to your house is your responsibility.”
Well, this is a fine turn of events.
We tried getting in touch with a good plumber in town but they were out, so we left a message.
I’m not sure how they find a leak underground. I haven’t found any vast wet spots in the yard. Is there some type of ground radar that would tell them, or would they have dig up the entire line? I’m trusting that the plumber knows what they are doing and will now how to do it.
