Now I have to move the mailbox

  • by

So, after all the work I did to get the new mailbox up and in place it looks like I’m going to have to move it.

Yesterday, we got a nice bin full of all of our mail that has been piling up. It wouldn’t fit in the actual mailbox because it was about three times the size of it. Seems that the Post Office won’t deliver your mail unless there is an actual mailbox to put it in. Go figure.

That made today the first day we got mail in the new mailbox. I walked down the driveway and picked up the mail. As I returned to the house I was looking over what had arrived. There was a mailer for a local car place with a nice discount coupon. More importantly, there was a sticky note stuck to it.

I read the note. It was from our delivery person. It was a very polite note, asking that I move the mailbox because it was now a few inches behind the neighbor’s mailbox. This is causing a problem for the delivery person because, as the note said, they couldn’t reach the door of the mailbox to open it and put the mail inside without opening their car door.

What happened to rain, sleet, snow, nor dark of night keeping them from making their appointed rounds? Did that dedicated part of the United States Postal Service go out the window when they got rid of their regular mail deliverers and gave it over to the gig economy? I don’t actually know this is what happened, or if it is just something about our local community that this happens. All I know is that last year I stopped seeing the regular mail carriers and their little postal jeeps. Now, we get folks dressed in jeans and t-shirts driving small SUVs with stickers declaring they’re mail deliverers dropping off our mail.

On the one hand, I’m all for trying to make other people’s jobs easier for them. You know, that whole ‘do one small thing to help someone out each day’ thing I keep going on about.

On the other hand, dang it, that was a lot of work getting the stupid mailbox installed! Don’t they realize how much effort I’m going to have to put in digging it all up again and moving it another couple of inches closer to the curb? It’s already within the six to eight inches from the curb spacing as required by the Post Office.

Aaaarrrgh!

Yes, I’m going to move the danged thing. It’s the right thing to do and it will make things easier on our delivery person. That’s a definite benefit for us because then we keep getting our mail.

Hopefully the predictions for a very rainy weekend will be inaccurate and I can get this done over the next few days.

Wish me luck, my Hordeling, that I don’t pull any more muscles in this process.
