The Desk Saga

  • by

Once again, sorry about the radio silence yesterday, my Hordeling. Still working out how to get the supernatural soap opera written and posted as well as doing the daily missives.

So, I have a really cool office desk that I received as a housewarming gift when I moved into my house in Texas. It looks like a cabinet but it opens up into a desk with spaces for books, filing, and even a printer. I love my desk.

When all my stuff got moved to the new house, my desk came along too. There is a loft space over the garage that I intend to use as an office / man cave. My goal was to put the desk up there. However, these things don’t always work out.

The guy who drove the truck with all my stuff was kind of an ass when it came to unloading it all from the van. He hired a few local college kids to help unload. The first thing he did was just put everything in the garage and called it a day. I told him that the boxes of books, and my desk, had to go upstairs in the loft. I had a great bookshelf (a companion piece to the desk) that I wanted up there too. The guy argued about it but in the end I won and the books got moved upstairs.

The desk and bookcase, not so much. Now, it turned out that the desk and bookshelf were too big to be able to get up the stairs. The desk probably could have made it but they made a half-assed effort and I conceded they weren’t going to get the desk upstairs. There was no way to get the bookshelf upstairs. (The bookshelf ended up in the house but they damaged it getting it inside).

The desk got set down in the garage, with a few more scratches and dents than when it started.

A few days later one of the guys from our church and his sons came over to help me get the desk upstairs. We lifted it and got it as far as the door and up the first few steps before the staircase turned. It was getting heavy, it was going to take a lot of effort to get it around the turn, so we put it down. That’s when the entire bottom half of the desk disintegrated. This thing was made of solid wood, so it shouldn’t have done that. But it did. We got the top half (intact) upstairs, then I gathered all the pieces for the bottom half and put them upstairs too.

All my books have been sitting in boxes this whole time, and the desk has been sitting in pieces. I want my library back and I want my desk to do some work.

Fortunately, one of my friends here is a carpenter. He came over yesterday to take a look at the desk. He thinks he can put it all back together. He’s also going to make it so we can break it into two parts should we ever have to move it to a new abode. At this point, I think I’d just sell it with the house should it come to that. The thing is a beast to move.

He’ll be back again tomorrow and we’ll see how much of it he can get put back together. He said it will probably be a multi-day project. If it takes a few days that’s fine by me. I can be patient. Once the desk is back in place, I’ll have some room that I can start unboxing books. Once I do that, I’ll have some room to get some bookshelves up there. Then I can finally have my office / man cave.
