Guest Post – The solution to the ‘War On Christmas’

  • by

I have a guest post today from a friend of mine. He doesn’t do social media, or have a blog, or an email list and he asked if I would post this for him. Since I can’t disagree with his argument, I’m posting it here. Enjoy.

Well, Christmas is coming once again, a time when we should all be wishing love, joy and good cheer to all our neighbors on this planet. (Wait, shouldn’t we be doing that EVERY day of the year? Never mind that for now, that’s a completely different topic.)

I haven’t heard it yet this year, but I am sure that there are people out there somewhere who are getting worked up again about the so-called “war on Christmas.” You know, about how people who say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” are satanists trying to drag this country to hell? Or how people who do say “Merry Christmas” are trying to push their religion on everyone else?

I have a very simple solution to this ugly mess. Basically, don’t be a dick.

If a person offers you sincere wishes of joy and happiness, and you contrive to find a way to take umbrage because they didn’t use the correct vocabulary, you’re being a dick. You’re not being devout nor holy nor steadfast nor conservative nor progressive nor secular nor woke nor anything; you’re just being a dick.

And this works for all sides of this silly needless conflict. Whether you’re a devout Christian basking in the joy and solace of God’s love for all of creation, or a secular atheist enjoying the freedom not to take part in any religious ritual, or an adherent of a different faith altogether, if someone wishes you joy using words of a different belief system, the correct response is “thank you.”

Merry Christmas to everyone. And don’t be a dick.

The Gadfly

I couldn’t have put it more succinctly myself.
