I had another all-too-rare day gaming with friends today. Fun was had.
Too much of my life has been work. Holding down jobs to make money to pay for things. You get on that hamster wheel and run at top speed just to stay in place.
Many religions view this constant work as a Good Thing(tm). They shun any type of pleasure for its own sake. Being happy is some kind of offense against God. Enjoying yourself is akin to Original Sin. Wanting anything other than God is idolatry.
Grind, grind, grind, grind, grind. All that work wears you down and crushes your soul. Maybe that’s their point? It’s grinding off the edges that keep you separated from God?
My question is – if you can’t have fun now and again, what’s the point? If you can’t enjoy the simple pleasures of life, why bother?
I’m not saying you have to be a hedonist and pursue pleasure non-stop. That is indeed its own trap. But all stick and no carrot?
You need to moderate things. Everything in moderation … including moderation.
Enough rambling for now. Go out and do something fun this weekend, dear reader.

Sorry, gotta quibble just a bit. Specifically the line, “Many religions view this constant work as a Good Thing.” If you take some time to discern most of the major religions, you would find they tend to agree with each other that if we were to truly start loving each other, life would be much easier and there wouldn’t be as much work to do.
BUT most of the priests, clerics, shaman and other Grand High Muckety-Mucks either don’t understand this, or more likely actively disagree with it. They want us to keep our noses to the grindstone, making sure that everything is done Just So, because otherwise God will surely smite us. Thus we live our lives in fear, kowtowing to the Muckety-Mucks who live off our labors, instead of living in the Joy that God truly wants for us.
