I may or may not have mentioned before that I’m an administrator on Holly’s Writing Classes forums. Holly Lisle has spent the last 30+ years writing science fiction and fantasy tales, as well as a few mystery suspense titles. She has distilled all that hard-earned knowledge into a series of classes for aspiring writers.
One of the things we do on the forums each year is run the Summer Of Fiction Writing event. The idea is to let writers set their own writing goals for the months of June through August. The forums let you record your progress and act as an accountability measurement. Also, the community is there to help you out and cheer you on if you get stuck.
I’m getting to the point that I must write. The stories in my head once again are clamoring to get out of my head. They want to be put on paper and read. They want OUT.
I’m hoping to participate in the SOFW event, now that all the packing and boxing and cleaning and other shtuff will be finished for a while. I’ve got an idea I want to try and I’m thinking the SOFW event may be a good vehicle to get some words on paper (or screen as the case may be.)
Another thing Holly did on the forums a long time ago was her creating an ‘ugly baby’ class. This would be a collection of ten flash fiction stories (five stories meets theminimum word count for publishing on Amazon, but I like ten stories just to overdeliver) that you put together, make a cover for, and publish to Amazon. I want to run an ‘unofficial’ version of the ugly baby challenge just for myself. If anyone else on the forums wants to join me, great, and if not, not harm, no foul.
Do you have any aspirations towards writing, dear reader? If so, you may wish to join us on the HWC forums for the Summer Of Fiction Writing event. Access to the forums is free, but there is a catch. You have to be enrolled in one of Holly’s classes to gain access to the forums. Fortunately, she has a FREE How To Write Flash Fiction That Doesn’t Suck class. It is a three week course that delivers one lesson a week to you for three weeks. It teaches you how to write a good flash fiction story, 500 words long, with a beginning, middle, and end. I highly recommend it as an introduction to writing if you’ve never written anything in your life, or if you’ve tried writing and have a paper brick of a manuscript stuffed in a drawer somewhere that you are too embarrassed to let see the light of day. As Holly says, “You can do this.”
If you give it a whirl, you may even want to join me in the unofficial ugly baby challenge.
If nothing else, I will post my progress here as well on how my project is going. My goal is to get one (or more) flash fiction collections finished and published this summer, no excuses!
