Computer woes insights

I think I’ve determined what is causing all my computer problems as of late. This is an educated guess (I’ve got a degree in Electronic Tech with a Computer Hardware specialization, so it’s probably a fair guess) and I don’t know for certain, but I believe the battery in my laptop is going bad.

I have run Speccy and it keeps showing that the CPU and motherboard keep overheating. I turned off the laptop last night, unplugged everything and let it sit overnight. When I plugged it back in the next morning, and ran Speccy, the CPU and motherboard were still overheating.

I can fan my laptop, and I have it elevated off the table top, and the temperature of the two components will go down. But unless I keep it up, the temperature slowly rises again. All of this leads me to believe it is the battery.

I’ve looked at new laptops and desktops. The ones I want I can’t afford and the ones I can afford I’m not thrilled about. I’m thinking of getting a desktop rather than a laptop because the larger screen is easier to read. Yes, I’m getting to an age where larger print is easier for me to read. The drawback to the desktop is that it isn’t portable the way a laptop is. I can’t take a desktop with me if I travel.

Most laptops will do everything a desktop could do for me. They have comparable power and memory and storage capacity. They are portable. They are just too small when it comes to viewing them. (Yeah, I know I can enlarge the text onscreen, but the overall size of the laptop screen makes it crowded and involves a lot of scrolling.) Maybe get a laptop and hook it up to an external large monitor?

What do you think, my Hordeling? Any recommendations on a new system? Just leave a comment and let me know.

  1. Is there some reason you can’t have both?

I have (several) desktops and a big monitor for real work. (And one laptop too heavy to haul around, but also hooked to the big monitor.) For dragging with me, a little Asus netbook that is bottom of the barrel for horsepower, but is very light and can exceed 24 hours of usable battery life (mostly used for writing, or reading ebooks).

    1. Other than budget constraints, no.
I am happy with the one I ordered, and it was within my budget. I’d like more RAM and a heavier duty graphics card, but they are not essential factors to what I plan to use the computer for.
