The trouble with dogs not being able to talk

We had the house cleaned today. The dogs were all excited about having someone in the house, especially Sirocco. He has to say hello to everyone and get a few pets and makes a fuss until he gets his way. Once he gets to say hello he calms down and behaves himself.

He was fine all day right up until late afternoon when I was getting the wife a drink. I usually offer the dogs a piece of ice. Sirocco turned his down. Unusual for him.

This evening when I fed the dogs, he again was sedate. They usually get excited and sit watching me eagerly as I get their food ready. Sirocco was lying on the floor, watching me but not with his usual level of excitement.

I put his bowl of food down on the floor next to him, and he had no reaction. The other dogs got into their bowls and ate, but not Sirocco. He lay there next to it and didn’t do anything. I had to shoo Major Tom away when he came over to start eating Sirocco’s food.

I went off to do some work on the computer but I could hear Sirocco whining in the kitchen. I came out to see what he was whining about. He whines about various things throughout the day, like going outside, or getting on the chair in the living room. He was still by his food bowl and hadn’t moved. I sat down and petted him for a while.

I went back to the computer and he followed me and lay down near by. I consulted a veterinarian friend of ours and she asked questions like was he choking, coughing or vomiting or if he’d been roughhousing with Major Tom and gotten injured. I told her nothing had happened that we knew of. She said to keep an eye on him and let her know if any new complications developed.

Sirocco sat on the couch for some time with me this evening, then he went off to hide under the furniture.

It would be nice to talk to the animals like Dr. Doolittle. Then Sirocco could tell me what was wrong and maybe we could get him some help. Since nothing is coming out of him that shouldn’t be coming out of him right now, we’ll keep an eye on him overnight and hope whatever the problem is resolves itself by morning.

  1. If he hasn’t had a coronavirus vaccine, he might have Covid. Dogs get it too, tho usually recover. Symptoms much like that, they just go flat for a few days.

    1. He was up again and bouncing around as usual the next morning, so I don’t think it was Covid. We suspect he got caught by the back door closing when he tried following Houdini outside. Houdini has enough bulk to push the door open, and Sirocco sometimes tries to run out after him. The door closes and catches him, so we think he might have injured himself this way.
