“The ship does what again?” Trolgar asked Eugene, his nine-year-old visitor.

“It’s The Good Ship Undertaking. It sails on the aether sea, to other worlds.” Eugene huffed, as if this was the most obvious thing in the world.

“What do you mean,’other worlds’?”

“You know, worlds like ours, but very far away. Past the stars. And you have to sail on the aether sea to get to them. If you sail at night, then you’ll reach the edge of our world and drift on to the aether sea. Then you can still use the stars to navigate so you can find your way back home.”

“Oh. Of course.” Trolgar pretended to understand. “Why?”

“So Captain Critch can explore.” Eugene drew an imaginary sword and waved it in the air. “And have battles with the natives.”

Trolgar drew and waved his own imaginary sword in defense. “Sounds dangerous. What if he gets hurt?”

Eugene stopped. “Then Maddoy the Healer fixes him.”

“Makes sense. I guess having a Healer would help with that.” Trolgar threw his imaginary sword into the river and held up his hands. “What if the natives are peaceful?”

“Then Mister Puck studies them. He’s the ship’s Scholar. He’s an elf and he has pointed ears.”

“Scholar, huh? What does he ‘schol’?”

“He doesn’t ‘schol’ anything. He writes.” Gideon’s tone sounded like he didn’t think Trolgar knew anything at all. “He writes everything about the world on scrolls and keeps them in the ship’s records, so if they need to know about something he’s already written it down.”

“That’s a lot of writing.”

“Well, yeah, because he writes about the people and how they live and what they eat, and what animals they hunt, and all sorts of stuff.”

“Still sounds like a lot of writing. What if his hand cramps from all of it?”

“Then he goes to Maddoy and he fixes it. But he and Maddoy don’t get along because Maddoy’s a man and Mister Puck is an elf. They bicker a lot. Maddoy is passionate about people and things, and Mister Puck likes facts and reasons.”

“Okay, but how do they travel on the aether sea? Do the winds blow them around?”

“They don’t need wind. There’s a giant who sits inside the ship. He uses these really big oars and rows them around the aether sea. I’m thinking about calling him Warp.”

“That’s an odd name. None of the giants I know have a name like that.”

“Yeah but it’s my story and I want to name him Warp. So there.”

“Well, you’ve got some imagination, Eugene.”

A female voice called out. “Eugene! Stop bothering Trolgar and come do your chores.”

Trolgar turned and waved to Eugene’s mother.

“Awwww! I gotta go.” Eugene started to leave, but turned around. “I’ll come back tomorrow and tell you more about my stories.” He scampered off the bridge.

Trolgar shook his head and watched the river roll by. “Poor kid. He’ll probably grow up to be a Bard.”

    1. Indeed. It helps me deal with all the voices in my head. Then again, all the voices in my head tell me I’m going to grow up to be Ruler of the Universe!
