Started a new set of flash fiction tales

  • by

Having now finished the three flash fiction tales I set as my goal for the Summer of Fiction Writing, I now turn to my next project.

Tonight I wrote the first of a series of tales based on common tropes of fantasy role-playing games, in particular Dungeons and Dragons. Every player, except maybe newbs, but veteran players worth their salt, will recognize these tropes. Fun things like the party first gathering in a tavern and getting a quest, guarding a caravan traveling across the continent, rescuing damsels in distress, doing a hexcrawl, and of course, murderhoboing (is that a word? it is now) your way trough a dungeon and taking all the treasure.

I’m going to have fun with this one. My Muse knows most of what is going to happen, while still leaving some room for surprises while I write. I just hope she doesn’t derail the whole project with one of her surprises.

The goal is to write ten flash fictions per volume, with three volumes being the most likely finished product. (What is it about the fantasy genre and trilogies?) Maybe I’ll be wild and crazy and write four volumes. We’ll see how it goes.

I’ve got a cast of characters, including a pair of clueless brothers, an apprentice magical adept, a cleric fresh from the seminary, and a devious rogue to round out the group. I’m sure they’ll have a dungeon delve somewhere along the way. Not sure if there will be any dragons. Oddly enough, for a game called Dungeons and Dragons, most player characters rarely run into a dragon. But they are a trope so you never know.

Anyway, onwards!
