A Post-Helene update

  • by

Well, Hurricane Helene has come and gone. Good riddance to her, I say.

For the most part, we went unscathed. Starting last night it started raining ad the winds picked up. The dogs were all pretty sedate, except for Sirocco, who started barking when the winds started getting strong. He’s usually not afraid of anything. He’s gone in the backyard during thunderstorms to use the potty.

I woke up around 6:00 A.M. Guess it is from force of habit now. The rain was coming down pretty hard and the winds were blowing. The wife got up not much later. Made her breakfast and got on the computer to check on the weather and local conditions. She went back to bed after eating, while I stayed up to check email and catch up on some things I’ve let go over the last few days while being sick. The dogs kept wanting to go out, right up until the time I opened the door. They stepped on the back porch but usually turned right back around and came inside.

Around 8:00 A.M. the power started flickering and my computer shut down when a flicker put the power off for a few seconds. Decided to pack it in and just go back to bed.

Sometime while I was sleeping the power went out. I discovered this when I woke briefly and the fan was no longer running.

I finally got up around 11:15 A.M. Judging from the time flashing on the microwave and oven in the kitchen the power was out a little over an hour.

Texted some friends to see if they were okay. They texted back that they had been out driving (in this weather?!) and were stuck. They said the weather had settled down where they were and they were thinking of walking back home. I told them to be careful if they did.

Made lunch and ate. The rain and winds finally died down around 1:00 P.M.

Fortunately we made it through mostly unscathed, as I stated before. There is a lot of flooding in the area and we are still under a flash flood warning until 9:00 A.M. tomorrow morning. The alert says to not travel unless you are in a dire emergency or directed to evacuate. I expect things will be disrupted around here for a few days at least, possibly longer. Still have not been able to get in touch with my friends. I’m hoping they are okay.

Again, stay safe, my Hordeling.
