A day lost to nothing

  • by

Here’s the problem with not having a plan for the day. I look back on today and wonder where the day has gone.

The wee doggy woke me up at 4:44 A.M. with his whining. I got up with every intention of going back to sleep, but the dogs were all riled up for some reason this morning and wouldn’t settle down. I ended up not going back to bed and tried to get some writing done (unsuccessfully).

Got the dogs out for their walks. Magdalena continues to try bolting at different times in the walk. Yesterday it was when one of the neighbors was walking his dog about half a block in front of us. She tried dragging me all the way to catch up with them but didn’t get there before they turned the corner. This morning it was squirrels running around. She is very hard to control since she has so much pull to her.

After the morning walks, I got breakfast, did a quick check of email and my writers forum, then got hit by my lack of sleep. Crawled back in bed and slept until around 10:45 A.M., then up for a shower and getting the day started.

A fellow author asked me to write the Foreword for his book so I got that done.

Then lunch. More of the delicious mac ‘n cheese.

Next up I formatted a short story for a friend of mine so he can get it published on Amazon.

The rest of the afternoon was spent running errands. One trip was to the Post Office to send something to one of the wife’s friends. Oddly enough, the clerk couldn’t find the address we were mailing the package to in their system. I found that rather strange. Ended up having to bring the package back home so we can check with the recipient to make sure he gave us the right address.

It was late in the afternoon when I got home. Here’s where I made a fatal mistake. I sat down to watch a program on TV. When it was over I prepared dinner for the wife and myself, and while eating, watched another program. Then a third, and a fourth. I haven’t done that in a while. I used to do it all the time, sometimes losing whole days to the Great Glass Teat as Harlan Ellison called it. I made a concentrated effort to stop watching TV all the time and limit myself to an hour a day. Or maybe one program a day, as sometimes I’d watch a movie which took more than an hour. The point is I had it under control. This evening I let that control go.

Some days are like that I guess. You have every intention of getting something done, and it all goes out the window. Not having a plan contributes to that. Usually I have a specific task or tasks to complete but that didn’t happen today. I did get the short story formatted but that’s it. I’ll just have to try to do better tomorrow.

How was your day, my Hordeling? I hope it went better than mine did.
