The Muse wants what the Muse wants

  • by

I’ve not written any fiction since the beginning of the year.

I was going to try to write something for the recent Blog Hop but didn’t make it. I wanted to do a story in the Space Opera genre but I couldn’t quite zero in on what I wanted to write about.

I think there are two parts to this issue.

The first part is I’ve been working on a programming project. Programming is my other ‘writing’ love besides writing fiction. I spent most of my adult working life doing programming, I enjoy it, and I’m not too shabby at it. Just like writing fiction, this project has the potential to bring in an income stream. I can get a little obsessive about coding but I think that is common among code monkeys like myself. I’ve been doing this project pretty much to the exclusions of everything else.

The second part is that the Muse is more interested in completing two other writing projects before moving on to the Space Opera flash fiction for the Blog Hop. They are both series of flash fiction collections. One is based around tropes involved with table-top role-playing games (TTRPGs). It’s kind of a humorous take on them as seen through the eyes of characters you might find in a typical fantasy RPG, especially one about underground lairs and large lizards.

The other is also in a fantasy setting, although a lot less fighting monsters and throwing fireballs around. It is more towards the ‘cozy fantasy’ end of things. Maybe not completely ‘cozy’ but there (probably) won’t be any giant conflicts of world-shatterig consequences. It will be more entered aroud the day-to-day life and “ins and outs” of a kinght trying to handle his duty as best he can.

During the day, as I’m coding, or running around with the wife, the Muse keeps telling me bits and pieces about the stories she wants in these two series. So, there’s nothing else to be done but give in.

I’m going to have to get back to focusing on the stories in these two series and start writing them.

I think that will please the Muse ad she’ll hand me a story (hopefully two) for the next Blog Hop coming up in April. She’s probably already working on them and holding them in reserve until I work with her on the other stories.

All right, Muse. Let’s see what we can do.
