The End Of The ‘In My __ Era’ Era

  • by

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of these ‘in my _ era’ memes. It seems that this has become the way to identify some theme or special occasion within one’s life so it can be expressed with a pithy saying for the world to see.

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I don’t ‘get it’.

It seems to me to be just another empty expression, void of any real meaning or purpose. Just another way for an attention starved world to scream ‘look at me!’ Maybe I’m just getting jaded as I continue to exist in this world.

Another similar expression was ‘keeping it real!’ As opposed to what? Keeping it unreal? (Nothing unreal exists?) People were throwing this phrase around all the time. I gather they meant they were being honest / truthful. Eventually it seemed to come to mean ‘I’m doing OK!’ But why should someone have to tell you they are telling you the truth? Does that mean they are normally lying to you? And if they are normally lying to you, why would you believe them when they tell you they are ‘keeping it real’? It’s like folks that say ‘Would I lie to you?’ In most cases, in my experience, the answer to that is a resounding ‘yes!’ In all, it just seems like a useless turn of phrase.

Again, maybe it’s just me, but I think it is time to put the ‘in my _ era’ meme to rest. Let it fade gracefully into the sunset and wither away. It did it’s job, but now it is time or the phrase to go peacefully into that good night.

Don’t worry. I’m sure as soon as it is gone some other silly, meaningless phrase will rise from its ashes to take over. That’s just human nature, I suppose.
