Having spent the last two days working on the garage we’ve managed to get a lot of stuff cleaned out and opened up some floor space. This allows me to move to Phase Two of the project. You wouldn’t think that something like cleaning out a garage would have to be done in stages, but here we are.
I swept out a lot of dirt and small tidbits of junk so I’d have some clean floorspace, then hauled out the ladder.
Phase Two is going through the rafters in the ceiling. I had no real idea what might be up there. I could see a dog crate and part of a box but that was about it.
I got the ladder set up and carefully climbed up so I could see what I was dealing with in the rafters. I was well aware that being alone in the garage and climbing a ladder was fraught with potential for harm so I was careful about scaling it. The last thing I needed was to fall off he ladder and hurt myself with no one around to help me. I did open the garage door so if I fell I might be able to get the attention of a passerby in case I needed someone.
Even with the ladder I wasn’t quite high enough so I had to stand on the second from the top step. The one they tell you not to stand on. Yeah, I like to live dangerously.
Looking around I found the aforementioned dog crate, the box (which had floor tiles in it), and several more boxes blocking my view of what was behind them. I decided to take down what I could reach and get out of the way. The boxes were all empty, and after sitting in a garage ceiling for who knows how long, were not in the best shape. There was also a Styrofoam cooler, that while dirty, looked like it could be cleaned up and re-used. The boxes got broken down and put into the recycling bin. The cooler got set aside for later cleaning.
Having the boxes out of the way I could see what else was up there. Big heavy things. Oh joy.
It looks like two metal shelving units, some type of net (volleyball, or maybe badminton?) and a wheelbarrow. How do you get a wheelbarrow up to the rafters in a garage?
I do not feel confident that I can get these things down by myself without likely falling off the ladder. I’m going to have to call in reinforcements.
Fortunately We have a son-in-law in the are who has agreed to come over and help me get the things down. We’ll be tackling it in the morning before things start getting too hot.
Here’s hoping we get everything without mishap, my Hordeling.
