Major Tom to the rescue! (Again!)

  • by

So, when he isn’t generally protecting the house, or making sure the infernal vacuum cleaner isn’t going to kill us, Major Tom keeps a eye on the wife and makes sure she is OK at all times.

The wife has degenerative spinal disease which makes it hard for her to get around. She also is heavy-set, which doesn’t help matters.

The other night around 2:30 A.M., she rolled off the side of he bed and fell on the floor. It is rather difficult for me to get her up by myself. I got to her and determined she wasn’t hurt. Thank the Lord for small blessings.

Major Tom came into the room to see what was going on. He saw me standing over the wife, trying to help her move. He started barking at me. I assume he thought I was hurting her. The wife told Major Tom to calm down and once he saw that she wasn’t injured he came over and licked her. I guess he decided I was being helpful after all.

It took some maneuvering but we got her to a sitting position on the floor. We figured our best plan of attack was to get her to the side of the bed so she could use that for leverage getting back up. We turned her on her side so she could get to her hands and knees. Once there, she crawled to the bed, putting her arms up on the mattress. Major Tom sat nearby, watching, waiting to assist.

The wife tried pushing up from the floor and on to the bed but she didn’t have enough strength to get up. We needed a way for me to help, so I fell back on a trick we learned from some EMTs who helped her up once when a similar situation happened. I got a bedsheet and wrapped it under her arms so it ran across her back. I got on the bed so I could try to help pull her up onto it. I got into position and she tried to push herself up as I pulled. Major Tom jumped on the bed and tried grabbing part of the sheet to tug on it. He stuck his head under my arm to do this.

We managed to get the wife halfway on the bed after several attempts. I got off the bed on my side and pulled her all the way on to the bed. Major Tom moved to go snuggle up against the wife. I’m guessing that is his way of showing he cares and wanted to make sure she was all better.

It’s nice that Major Tom is willing to lend a paw in a crisis. The other dogs just kept sleeping but he came into the room to make sure all was well. He is a good and faithful protector.

I hope you have someone like that in your life, my Hordeling.
