The Case of the Missing Diet Mt. Dew

  • by

The wife’s favorite carbonated beverage is Diet Mt. Dew. I don’t like the shtuff myself, can’t stand the taste of it, but hey, to each their own.

One of our favorite local eateries has Diet Mt. Dew listed on their menu. That was one of the things that drew the wife to the restaurant in the first place. She could always get her Diet Mt. Dew with her meal.

For a number of years this held true. But in the last year and a half or so, they stopped carrying her drink. It’s still on the menu, but they started being consistently ‘out’ every time we ate there.

For the last several visits he wife has bee telling the waitstaff that they need to bring back Diet Mt. Dew, or at least take it off the menu if they weren’t going to carry it anymore. I wrote an online review for the place and put in it that if they really wanted to make my wife happy, they should start carrying Diet Mt. Dew again.

She has spoken to various managers when they are walking around the restaurant asking how the meal was about carrying the drink. They have usually responded with vague answers that they have to talk with corporate to get it into the running.

Tonight we were there again. As we finished our meal the manager came over to ask us how everything was. I didn’t recognize him so I’m guessing they had some rollover in employees. The wife brought up the lack of Diet Mt. Dew. He told us that the location stopped carrying it because they didn’t sell enough of it to make it worth while. Well, at least he was honest about it. He said he’d be better off going out and buying a few twenty ounce (20 oz.) bottles and putting them aside for her than carrying Diet Mt. Dew and not have anyone order it.

I can see his reasoning. The restaurant is in business to make money. If they aren’t selling enough Diet Mt. Dew to make it worthwhile then they should drop the product. But they should also take it off the menu so the waiters don’t take the flack when some crazy woman comes in demanding that they carry it.
