We’re heeeeeeeeeeere

Sorry about the radio silence, my Hordeling. Things have been a little crazy this week. Let me explain.

At the beginning of the week, I left on a two day road trip to our new home. An old college buddy of mine went with me so he could help wrangle the dogs. The wife stayed behind to finish getting things ready for the move and to close on the house. She had her hands full because there was a lot of shtuff that wasn’t packed yet. I did the best I could but just plain ran out of time.

Things went pretty good the first day and we got to our hotel. The dogs did well and we got them out for plenty of potty breaks. The second day didn’t go as well. Fourteen hours of driving. Every time we made any small amount of progress we ran into traffic, or construction, or heavy rains, or combinations of the three. Fortunately the three times we stopped to et the dogs a potty break the rain either stopped or was very light. We made it to our new home, and promptly went to sleep.

We had to be up early the next morning to meet with the exterminator. The house inspection turned up a termite infestation and we had to get that taken care of. The exterminator got in about an hour later than expected but things went well and he was done in about two hours. We had just enough time to get lunch and take care of a few minor errands before we had to drive to the airport to get the wife. Also, my friend was leaving about a hour after the wife got in. I dropped him off then sat and waited an hour for the wife’s plane to arrive. Other than a short nap I spent the time reading.

The wife’s arrival time came and went. An hour and a half later her plane finally landed. Then another hour and a half later she finally deplaned and made it to the passenger pick up where I could get her. We went out to dinner then made our way home.

The next day the movers arrived with our shtuff. It took longer to unload everything than we expected, but we got all the stuff into the house. The place is packed to the gills with boxes and we’re going to have quite a job getting all of it unboxed and put away. We’ve got most of the furniture in place, or at least in the rooms it belongs in. I’ll have to do a little rearranging of some of it. That’s going to be fun.

The next day we had errands to run, and a doctor’s appointment for the wife. She fell about a week before we moved and injured her left leg. Her thigh and calf were swollen so we had to get her to the doctor in case there was a blood clot. After she got an ultrasound I’m happy to report she is blood clot free. We still don’t know what is causing her pain but at least we’ve ruled out a potentially serious medical problem.

I finally got my computer set up last night. Since then I’ve been trying to catch up on a week’s worth of email and news.

I’ve been in the house several days now. I’m “home”. It doesn’t quite feel like home yet. I suppose it will take a while for me to settle in. I’m hoping I will at any rate. It’s also chaotic because I can’t find anything. I’m a very location-based personality. I put something somewhere and I expect it to be there when I get back. And until I find all the things I expect to be in places, and put them in new places, I won’t feel ‘normal’. Until then, I’m going to be wondering where all my stuff is, and whether it actually got moved or got left behind, or whether it is still going to show up. There is an upside to all this in that I can re-inventory my books.

Today has been running around getting supplies and food for the new place. The weather has not helped me settle in. For the last 28 hours or so we’ve had sustained winds around 25 miles per hour (around 40 kilometers per hour). They’ve been howling and, to borrow a line from Jayne Cobb, it has been damaging my calm. Mix in some rain and it reminds me too much of a hurricane. They are likely to calm down overnight so that will be good.

It’s a transition and while I wait for things to ‘return to normal’ I’m going to start concentrating on my writing again. My Muse has been giving me ideas for stories, but she has also branched out into ideas for music videos. Or rather, animations set to songs I like. My Muse is nothing if not diverse.

Come Monday, I’ll be back to my regular blogging. See you then, my Hordeling.
