Sirocco is under the bed, er, weather

  • by

The entire furry crew came in to get me up at 5:45 AM this morning. I got up, did some reading as I waited for the CHKDSK function to finish running on my external drive, got breakfast for the wife, and got all the dogs out for a morning walk. Sirocco did fine. He even tried chasing a bird.

I got ready for the day, got breakfast, ran an errand for the wife, and got back in time for the ending of the CHKDSK function running on my drive. (Roughly twenty seven and a half (27.5) hours. I’m hoping to not have to do that again any time soon but the problem did get resolved.)

We needed to go out to get some more stuff done. As I got everything together for the outing I made note of where all the dogs were. Major was under a table in the living room, Magdalena was next to the couch. Didn’t see Sirocco anywhere. I took a quick glance around the bedroom, didn’t see him, so I closed the door. Usually if he is in the bedroom, he’ll come running to the door and whine to be let out. Didn’t happen.

I got the wife to the car, put the stuff she needed in the back seat, and came back in to find the wee dog.

Not finding him anywhere I decided to check under the bed. There he was, just looking at me look a him. He wouldn’t be coaxed out so I left him there so we could get stuff done.

Several hours later when we returned, he was still under the bed. He still wouldn’t come out. He was close to the edge so I gave him some pets.

In the early evening I got food for the dogs. Usually Sirocco is the first in line when food is involved but he remained hidden. I put his food right next to the edge of the bed. He stuck his head out to eat and let the wife and I pet him for a while, but he still refused to come out. I did rub his nose and it was wet, but not cold.

I figured the big test would be the last call for the night, i.e. the final potty break. I got a treat and tried coaxing Sirocco out but no go. He wouldn’t even come out for that. It must be serious for him to turn down food.

I could drag him out forcibly but I don’t want to do that for two reasons. First, if he is injured I don’t want to make things worse by grabbing some part of him and dragging him out from under the bed. Second, that’s his ‘safe space.’ He can get under there when Magdalena is bullying him to get away from her and I don’t want to violate that.

I don’t know what happened. He did fine on the morning walk, and I don’t recall hearing him yelp at any point in the day, which is a clear sign that Magdalena has bit him or stomped on him. Maybe something happened when I was of running the early morning errand for the wife? Possibly he ate something he shouldn’t have.

I’ll have to see how he is in he morning and if he wants to go for a walk. Maybe a good night’s rest will help. Time will tell.
