A path forward on serial writing?

  • by

Just a little over a year ago my Muse decided she wanted to write a soap opera.

I indulged her quite a bit down that rabbit hole. I worked on some characters, actions, plotlines, settings and background details. Ultimately though, I have a hard time getting into the project myself. I think the Muse finally sensed that, so we’ve been working on something similar that runs a little more to my tastes.

What we’ve come up with is more of an urban fantasy mashup of a lot of (mostly) 1990’s media that I enjoyed. Things like Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Amazon), Angel (Amazon), The Crow (Amazon), Kindred: The Embraced (Amazon), Charmed (Amazon), the World Of Darkness RPG line (Vampire: The Masquerade (Amazon), Mage: The Ascension (Amazon), Werewolf: The Apocalypse (Amazon), etc.), Forever Knight (Amazon), and Highlander (Amazon). Throw in some Dark Shadows (Amazon) and a smidgen of The Night Gallery, and hit the ‘pulverize’ button on the blender. In the end, I’ve got a large canvas to paint on, all with my own little spins on the material.

I’m thinking of posting five days a week, Monday through Friday, somewhere between 750 and 1500 words per episode. That’s an ambitious schedule.

There are several ways I can go about this. First I could do it all here on my own website. It has the benefit of giving me total control over everything.

I could do it all under is own website, That’s added expense, as well as more work, posting content there and here as well as keeping two sites up and running. It would help with ‘branding’ and keeping it as its own separate thing.

I could go with Substack. This has the benefit of helping get new subscribers as well as having everything built-in for taking payments.

Yes, I do want to make this a paying gig. I want to be totally upfront about that. My initial thinking is that I release a month or two of free content to give folks a taste of my writing style and the stories I’ll be creating. Then I’d switch over to putting the continuing story behind a paywall. If I can get enough subscribers to pay me $100 a month (to start) I’ll keep going. Maybe I’d charge somewhere between $5 to $10 a month for a subscription. I’d like get to a point where I’m making $3000 a month with this. If I make more than that, even better.

What do you think, my Hordeling? Does this sound feasible to you? Is it anything you’d be interested in reading? Leave a comment and let me know.
