The wife has spent enough time away from home to get antsy about staying in the long-term care facility. To help relieve her anxiety I took our Scrabble game there so we could play.
She has not been at her best while playing which has resulted in me winning six out of seven games. I feel that they are sort of hollow victories as she wasn’t playing at the top of her game, but I’ll take the wins.
The tides have turned though and now she is back to winning most of the games. She won the last three games we’ve played. When I win the final scores are usually within about twenty points of each other. When she wins, she usually wins by one hundred (100) points or more.

I did have one good play the other day. I got to play the word “wave” on a triple word score space, netting me thirty (30) points. Then a few turns later I got to put “heat” in front of it, making it “heatwave” also on a triple word score space, netting me fifty-one (51) points.

After that play I drew my letters to refill my hand and ended up with “iootoii”. How the heck do you play that?

I did end up playing it and drew more letters. This time I ended up with “ooiiell” in my hand. Not a whole lot better.
Ultimately I lost the game.
I start of most games pretty good, pulling far ahead of the wife in score. Then it’s like I run out of steam. I just get hard-to-play hands like the ones above. No matter where I play I always seem to end up opening double word and triple word tiles which she swoops in and plays, racking up high point scores. Meanwhile I get to play a three letter word like “ran” or “end”, not getting many points in the process, which opens those spaces up for her.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the wife is likely to keep winning. I think she let’s me win a game every now and again just so I’ll keep playing. If that’s her strategy, it’s working. I keep playing hoping I can beat her again.
Hope springs eternal.

Obviously, there needs to be a new rule in Scrabble where a player has the option to spell out words in binary as well as English.
