The wife may come home soon, but ….

  • by

The wife has been in the hospital or the long-term care facility for most of the past month. Today, they told her she’d be released sometime in the next few days. Most likely on Monday.

This is Good News! I will be happy to have her back home. I’m sure the dogs will be happy too. (Major has been peeing in the house since she went to the hospital, probably in protest.)

I find I don’t like being by myself in the house. Yes, I have the dogs, but it’s not the same as having the wife here. As Professor Henry Higgins put it in My Fair Lady “I’ve grown accustomed to her face.” The house seems so … empty isn’t the right word … dull? lifeless? without her.

There is a downside to the wife returning home, however. She is not yet done with her regimen of antibiotics to get rid of the bacterial blood infection. This means that she will need to continue to have them at home. She will have a nurse that will come three times a week to help out with the IVs.

The rest of the time it falls to me to do it. I’m not a trained medial person but I’m told hat it is a relatively straightforward process and I should be able to do it.

I’m fairly certain that I can learn. But … and for me, this is a very big ‘but’ … I don’t like IVs. As I’ve told every medical professional who has tried to put one in me over the last two decades or so “Do the words ‘enormous green rage monster‘ hold any meaning for you?” I cannot watch them being done to other people, even in movies or TV shows. Having me do it to someone else, especially someone I care about, is anxiety-inducing at the very least. I am not likely to fare well with this course of action.

I must remember one thing.

I am a Knight, and the wife is my Lady. I will do this for her, because it must be done. I will put aside any personal feelings or problems and make sure she is taken care of. Knights do the Hard Things so others may benefit, no matter the cost to themselves. It is part of my vows as Husband as well as Knight. I do this to give my wife her best chance at a full and healthy life. Bring it on. We shall emerge victorious.
