The wife is not coming home

  • by

Well, it looks like the wife will not be coming home just yet. She was to be released today, mainly because her insurance doesn’t want to pay for her to remain in the long-term care facility. I guess it is costing the insurance company money now, so they are ending her payments for her treatment.

I went over to visit her this morning, anticipating she would be released today. We packed up her belongings and I loaded them in the car. They had just started an antibiotics IV on her so we had to wait for that to complete before she could leave.

The rest of the morning was sitting around waiting. The nurse came in when the IV drip was finished and said they were just waiting on the antibiotics to be ready so we’d be able to do them at home.

Lunch time rolled around and we still didn’t hear anything. The wife’s lunch was delivered to her. She nibbled on it a bit but wasn’t really interested in eating. Part of it was the anticipation of release, and part of it is that the food quality of the facility is barely a step above public high school cafeteria lunches. The shtuff is edible but not terribly tasty.

The early afternoon IV drip arrived. The wife wouldn’t be leaving util it was done so I came home to get lunch for myself.

While at home the wife called and said that she wasn’t going to be released today. It seems that she is “too complicated.” Trying to do the antibiotic treatments at home was going to be a problem. She needs one every four hours. In addition, she has a medication she takes every four hours but on a different time table than the IV. Since I would have been the only person to take care of her 24 / 7 it didn’t look like I was going to get any restful sleep. Also, they seemed concerned about being able to teach me how to hook up the IVs. (I wonder why?) I suppose I would have gotten a sort of polyphasic sleep, where I would have slept an hour and a half during each four hour period. I’m not sure how long I’d be able to keep going under those conditions.

The wife will have to stay at the long-term are facility most likely until August 11. Her insurance won’t pay for it, several other insurance companies and health services the staff checked with also won’t pay for it, so we’ll have to pay for it out of pocket. It ain’t easy or cheap to get sick these days.

I hope you’re staying healthy, my Hordeling. Like the saying goes “You don’t got nothin’ if you don’t got your health.”
