There’s an anthology taking submissions right now that I want to be in. Tomorrow is the deadline for submissions so I needed to get something completed today.
I got up this morning, walked the dogs, got breakfast for the wife and myself. The wife went back to sleep so I sat down at my computer.
I read over the submission guidelines and the things that they are looking at for consideration of inclusion in the anthology.
Then I did a little research on the topic, got an idea for a story, then opened up my word processor.
I typed out the first line of the story. My Muse was immediately intrigued and then the words just flowed. I completed the story, then let it sit for a while. I made a few revisions, then let it sit again. One final revision pass then I sent it off to the wife.
The wife read the story and liked it. I let it set until this evening. Then I went over it one last time, made a few minor changes, then sent it off.
This is the way writing is supposed to be. My Muse shows up and the words of the story just start coming together. The story may not always end up the way I intended when I started but most of the time I think it turns out better. I’m guessing this is the ‘flow state’ as described in Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Everything is just right and it works and comes together.
I appreciate my Muse. She wants to tell stories and I want to tell stories. The trick is getting the two to merge so that we both want to work on the same story at the same time. When we do, things go as smooth as butter. When we aren’t on the same page things get confused and writing becomes a chore, every word a struggle to get on the page.
Now that my Muse and I are co-operating again I hope I can continue this streak. There are plenty of stories that need to be written and my Muse wants to Write. All. The. Stories. Getting her to focus on one story is sometimes like trying to catch a rabid squirrel on crack.
We’ll see how things go, my Hordeling.
