My Muse has an odd schedule

  • by

I don’t know why, but my Muse gets interested in different writing projects based on places I am or things I’m doing during my daily routine.

For instance, if I’m shaving, my Muse always starts thinking about the supernatural soap opera. She starts chatting about characters, places, the main villain(s).

Similarly, if I’m driving in the car she starts going on about the classic soap opera, also talking about characters and the nasty things they do to each other. She has one part of it that has me intrigued, a set of characters and location that I think could be quite interesting. I think she threw that at me so I’d be more likely to start writing the classic soap opera instead of the supernatural one.

When I’m walking the dogs it seems to be open season. I never know what she’ll throw at me. I guess she sees it as ‘creative time’ where she gets to try out new ideas to see if I like them. She threw the post-apocalyptic storyline at me the other day and has followed up with a few more ideas for it since then.

She gets on a fantasy kick when I’m in the kitchen, either making diner or cleaning the dishes. She was kicking around some ideas for a sword and sorcery story last night. I think the idea needs to mature a bit but so far I like the basics of it.

My Muse likes to throw story ideas at me. That’s a Good Thing(tm), most of the time. A few years ago, when I was getting married, she was in a whirlwind, throwing ideas at me far faster than I could keep up. The mental churn was out of control. Maybe it was a survival of the fittest situation. I know I don’t remember a lot of the ideas but a few of them stood out. Maybe my Muse was just seeing which ideas were strong enough to survive and be retained, and which would fade into obscurity.

I try to write down the good ones, or at least the ones I like the most, so I can have a record of them. I may not get to them soon, but I would like to try to write them at some point.

What about you, my Hordeling? Where do you get your creative ideas? Leave a comment and let me know.
