The wife and I put in some more time in the new house today, getting yet more boxes unpacked and put away.
We came across a box that had a bunch of pillows on the top part. I got them out and put away in the bedroom, only to discover that most of the food that was leftover in our pantry when it came time to move was in the bottom half of the box. Mostly canned and boxed goods, but surprisingly a six of soda and a few loose ones. I would have thought they’d have burst given the rough treatment of the move and high temperatures. Lo and behold, they survived the transit. A can of something (cranberry sauce, I think?) with a pull top didn’t make it and leaked all over the rest of the food. Had to throw away a few cans that had corroded and a couple of boxes of various foods (pasta and the like) that got spoiled.
We came across a box of the wife’s shoes. Most of them made it OK, but there were a few pair that disintegrated. I’m not sure if it was from age, or the transit, or the heat, but they were crumbling into tiny pieces. It made a mess over everything else in the box and was rather tricky to pick up for disposal. If I had the vacuum cleaner unpacked I’d have used it.
We got through a lot of the living room but there is still more to go. Once we can finish it off, the only thing we’ll have left to go through is the study / office. It will be good to have a livable space again.
As the day went on I noticed something. The house is easier to move though now. The boxes are getting unpacked, then broken down and moved out to the garage. I intend to turn them into building material at some point. But I’m not having to step over things and nudge boxes out of the way with my foot so I can get around. It’s wonderful.
Now, time for a minor rant. We got a notice from the Department of Transportation saying we owed them money because they didn’t have proof of insurance on our cars for a date in June. Called them about it and they said they need a FS-1 form showing we had insurance. We changed companies after we moved, but we kept the old policy going until the new one was established. We had the form sent from the new company, but it turns out they needed it sent from the old company.
Our old company was Geico. We couldn’t get the form we needed on their website, and even if we did the DOT wants it sent from the insurance company directly, so we called customer service. After getting through the touchtone labyrinth to being able to talk to a representative, we had to hold for the next available operator. While we were on hold they kept pushing us to the website to handle our problem. As I stated, been there, done that, wasn’t helpful.
I stayed on the phone for an hour and forty-seen minutes waiting for someone to help us before I had enough and hung up. No one ever came on the line. Very disappointing.
I hope your life is going smooth and stress-free, my Hordeling.
