Gaming Night – much fun was had

  • by

So, Sunday night we had a chance to get together with some friends for a night of gaming.

We met up at a local gaming store that has an area set up with tables. The general public can come in to play games and have some fun. There are plenty of games you can borrow if you don’t have anything of your own to play. They also have food, drinks and snacks you can buy. Several days of the week they also have a kitchen that makes healthy meals. Hey, gaming is a hunger-making business.

Anyway, we played a few rounds of Stupid Deaths. The basic idea is you put your pawn on the starting point of the board. Death is placed on the opposite side of the board. You take turns drawing a card from the deck and reading the tale of some poor soul who died in an odd way. Each player then has to determine if the story is true or false. If they guess right, they get to move their pawn forward one space. If they get it wrong, then they move Death forward one space. If Death eventually lands on, or passes by, the space where your pawn is located, you ‘die’, removing you from the game. It was loads of fun. I usually was the first player to ‘die’ each time we played. I guess I’m terrible at determining which death stories were true or false. Still, it was fun. During the last game I came in second.

And of course we had to play Scrabble. I came in last there too, but again it was fun.

As we were leaving the store owner was at a table on he other side of the store with a big tray and tons of cards. I asked what they were doing and they said they were sorting Magic: The Gathering cards. I have never played M:TG but I’d like to learn how one of these days. If for no other reason than it is a cultural touchstone. But I might enjoy it and end up with a new game to play.

In all, it was an enjoyable evening. I hope it won’t be so long before we get to have another.
