The wife and I went out to eat this afternoon at a local eatery. It’s a chain restaurant and when we pulled up we weren’t sure that they were open. Saturday afternoon and the parking lot was empty. We pulled in and the place was indeed open. We went in, got a table and sat down.
While we were looking over the menu I was vaguely aware of the music playing in the background. It was Kentucky bluegrass music. Not my first listening choice but I’ll listen to it if it is playing. There was something familiar about the song but I couldn’t quite place it. I returned my attention to the menu so I could order.
One the waitress came by to get our order I returned my attention to the music. I started listening to the lyrics, I recognized them just couldn’t put them together with the bluegrass tempo. Finally my brain put the lyrics into their proper context. It was Pink Floyd’s song Time.
I tell you, my Hordeling, you haven’t heard Pink Floyd until you’ve heard it done as bluegrass. I don’t think I would have ever put the two together in a million years. Surprisingly, it worked.
I looked for the song on YouTube. I found a version of Time done in bluegrass format. It isn’t the same as the one I heard in the restaurant but it is close. The one I heard was more … blugrass-y? Here’s the one I found:
A few minutes later while we were eating another familiar song came on, again done in a bluegrass style. The Dire Straits So Far Away. I looked around YouTube but was unable to find any bluegrass versions of the song. If anyone out there knows of one please let me know.
I think the oddest cover versions of any songs I’ve ever heard was a tape a friend of mine sent me sometime back in the late 80’s or. It was a tape of Beatles tunes, but they were all done more like German Military Marching songs. I remember She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah as being particularly odd sounding. The ‘Ja, Ja, Ja’ part came out both kind of funny and kind of disturbing.
And of course, you really need to hear Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven on the bagpipes. I found a good version on YouTube a few years ago but can’t seem to find it now.
Have you got any interesting music mashups, my Hordeling? Leave a comment and let me know.
